Vegas, Baby!

Joe and I are headed to Las Vegas for the weekend.  We found a package deal last weekend that was just too good to pass up.

I'm SUPER excited.

First, I've been to Vegas several times - but always for business, never for pleasure (kind of like always a bridesmaid, never a bride).

The thing is, with business trips, I got to stay at the Mandalay Bay, the Venetian, and the Bellagio.   Great places, but our budget doesn't call for the best of the best.  We're still staying on the strip, but we're not going crazy.

But the thing about going to Vegas for business is that we never ate at one of the buffets.  In fact, I didn't even know they had such a thing there (I mean, ASIDE from something like The Golden Corral).

Apparently these buffets are amazing - with pretty much everything your little heart (and stomach) can desire.

So, what to do?

Well, first, I pumped Joe for information - and just so you know, he's completely excited about all his yummy options.  These buffets are about $30 a piece (at least at MGM Grand) for dinner.

And oh man, the temptation to just eat whatever I want without any consequences is SO there....and the food isn't even in front of me right now!

But then I realized that $30 for a nice dinner (if it's as nice as Joe says it is) means that I get to be picky.  And yes, I can have whatever I want...but I need to be aware that there are consequences to wanting (and eating) lots of high fats/caloric foods.

My plan?  To listen to my hunger levels.  To take my time.  To enjoy the food (if it's as wonderful as he says it is).  To get in balanced meals - full of veggies, whole grains, and fruits.

And, most importantly, to not be so stuffed that I can't enjoy the other stuff we want to do in Vegas.  Like sight-seeing, watching some shows (we already have tickets to see O!), and walking around.

But I would LOOOVE some tips from you all on how to enjoy Vegas...have you been there?  If so, how did you manage on your healthy journey?

Sounds fun.

But remember the caveat: "whatever happens in Vegas stays in Vegas...unless it's food. Food will follow you out of Vegas and settle right into your hips."

Keep that in mind!

I'm not a Vegas or casino kind of gal (I'd rather go to the mail if I have that kind of cash to blow). BUT, I remember taking a tour of the Hoover Dam that was pretty cool the last time I was there.

I wonder if you could pack your Magic Bullet and make smoothies with fruit from the buffets?

I LOVE VEGAS! ...and the fact that I only live a few hours away means I go there pretty often. When we go we decide to workout (most hotels have gyms) and eat healthy for two meals. The third meal is a freebie. Its Vegas, you can have some fun, just do so in a smart way. BTW, go to hash house a go go for breakfast. Split whatever you order, there will be enough, but it is completely worth having.

I am thinking the SAME thing. I'm going for work 20-24th, but I'll be alone, so I could really go nuts. My advice is to enjoy yourself, but don't go overboard. Also, you will be walking a LOT. A LOTTTT. So maybe hit the hotel gym every day, enjoy your healthy food and get some indulgences in too, and walk it off.

It will probably be warm enough to paddle about in the pool - and the hotel pools are generally amazingly fantastic, so you may want to try that.
And the buffets? Well, yeah. They are pretty sumptuous. I have no tips for being mindful in that arena; I've never managed to do anything less than an all out gorge-o-rama myself!

Have a great time! Remember to work on your strength training the next few days in case you have the urge to drag somebody into a wedding chapel. Sometimes they fight hard.

Have fun, balance the "tasty" food with veggies and walk a lot.

That's my advice. Hope you are having fun!

I'm a little behind on my Reader... Did you already have your weekend in Vegas, or is it coming up?

I live in Vegas, and would be happy to provide recommendations. Let me know!

I'm so glad you get to go to Vegas! It's pretty much the only place my family goes on vacation. Yep, we've been to Maui and they're still choosing Vegas. Nevermind that they get everything for free....

So when I go there I always make sure to work out first thing in the morning. That means that even if I don't eat as healthily as I should, I still get in that early morning kick my metabolism needs. Also, I do not feel the need to order a drink every time the waitress comes around, even if they are FREE. Seriously. Lastly, I enjoy myself. It's vacation! It's indulgent! If we're going to go out for a nice dinner, I eat a small lunch. It's all about portions. Have fun!
